Chevrolet

Seven Chevrolet models,
documented the concours way.

The 1955-onward Bel Air on the Tri-Five / B-body chassis, the 1958-onward Impala on the full-size B-body, the 1964-onward Chevelle on the A-body 112-inch unibody (with the 1970-only LS6 454 anchor), the 1967-onward Camaro on the F-body 108-inch unibody (with the Z-code stamped-cowl-tag Z/28 anchor), the 1963-onward Nova on the X-body 111-inch unibody, the 1964-onward El Camino on the A-body coupe pickup, and the 1970-onward Monte Carlo on the A-body personal-luxury coupe. Sixty-one per-(model, year) subpages carry the year-correct cowl-tag / casting / RPO / paint decoding on the Fisher Body authentication track.

Why it is different

The Chevrolet authentication track is Fisher Body & 7-model-by-platform.

The 1967-onward Camaro and the 1964-onward Chevelle share the Fisher Body trim-tag authentication track — a cowl tag stamped at the assembly plant with the Z-code ordering prefix (for the Z/28 fitment on the Camaro), the X77-ordered 396-base code on the SS 396 Camaro, the LS6 / LS5 / L34 RPO codes for the 1970-only SS 454 Chevelle, and the body-by-Fisher M-code discriminator. The Corvette authentication runs through the body-number plate, NOT a cowl tag; the Chevrolet pickup-track (El Camino) runs Fisher Body trim tag on the A-body coupe pickup. Cross-platform confusion stays on the Ford / Mopar / Buick / Olds tree; the Chevrolet authentication tree stays Fisher Body / 7-model-by-platform only.

The casting separation is the second axis. The Chevrolet small-block V8 (the DZ-coded 302 Z/28 block, the 350 / 400-base blocks) does NOT interchange with the Pontiac V8 track, the Buick 400 / 430 / 455 Nailhead or big-block track, or the Oldsmobile Rocket V8 track. The Chevrolet 454 (LS6 / LS5 / L34 in 1970) does NOT interchange with the Buick 455 or any Pontiac / Olds big-block. Reading a Pontiac 400 balancer against a Chevrolet 454 LS6, or a Buick 455 cylinder head against a Chevrolet small-block, is the off-by-one-marque error at the engine level.

The third axis is the platform shell. The 1967-onward Camaro rides the GM F-body 108-inch-wheelbase Camaro unibody (NOT the 1964-onward Chevelle on the A-body, NOT the 1968-onward Pontiac Firebird on the same F-body chassis). The 1964-onward Chevelle rides the GM A-body 112-inch-wheelbase unibody (shared with the Pontiac LeMans / GTO, the Buick Skylark / GS, and the Oldsmobile Cutlass / 442) — and the 1964-onward El Camino coupe pickup PLUS the 1970-onward Monte Carlo personal-luxury ride the same A-body chassis. The 1962-onward Chevy II / Nova rides the X-body 111-inch-wheelbase unibody (NOT F-body, NOT A-body). The Chevrolet-side cowl tag, the LS6 / LS5 / L34 RPO code, and the 7-model-by-platform entry point authenticate the Chevrolet track — not a Buick GS, not a Pontiac GTO, not a cross-X-body Nova fitment painted onto a Chevelle chassis.

Timeline

Six eras across ninety-nine model years.

EraYearsDefining platforms
Founding (pre-war / wartime freeze)1911–1946William C. Durant co-founds the Chevrolet Motor Company on November 3, 1911 (incorporated 1911, merged into General Motors 1918). The pre-war four-cylinder / Stovebolt six-cylinder lineup defines Chevrolet through the 1942 civilian production freeze.
First postwar volume era1946–1954Civilian production resumes on the 1946 Chevrolet Stylemaster / Fleetmaster, leading to the 1950-onward Stovebolt inline-six / first-generation small-block V8 (the 265-cubic-inch V8 introduced in 1955 — the modern Chevrolet small-block V8 lineage).
Small-block / big-block pre-muscle1955–1966The 265 (1955) → 283 (1956) → 283 Fuelie (1957 launch-year-only) → 327 (1962) → 350 (1967) small-block V8 launch lineage, plus the 1965-onward big-block V8 (396 cubic inches in 1965-onward). The 1964-onward A-body Chevelle / Pontiac LeMans / Buick Skylark / Oldsmobile Cutlass carries the muscle-prep on the 112" wheelbase.
Muscle peak (Z/28 / SS 396 / L88)1967–1969The 1967 Camaro launches the GM F-body on a 108-inch wheelbase, with the Z/28 fitment racing the SCCA Trans-Am series (Z-code stamped-cowl-tag authentication — the marque-anchor). The 1967-onward SS Camaro (X77-prefix big-block 396) carries the Chevrolet-side SS 396 engine family that originated on the 1966 Chevelle; the L78 / L88 Corvette carry a related but distinct big-block lineage. The 1966-onward A-body Chevelle 396 carries the SS 396 Chevelle, the muscle-peak window on the GM A-body 112-inch-wheelbase unibody. — the muscle-peak anchor.
LS6 + decline-era emissions downturn1970–1973The 1970-only LS6 454 (450 hp) closes the muscle-peak window on the A-body Chevelle. The 1971-onward emissions-era downturn carries the A-body through the malaise era; the 1973 LS4 310 hp is the Monte Carlo SS terminal. The 1970-onward Camaro rides out the F-body through the same downturn; the 1970-onward Corvette L88 fitment ended with the 1969 L88 build. The 1970-only El Camino SS 454 LS5 (NOT the Chevelle LS6 450 hp) and the 1970-only Monte Carlo SS 454 LS5 carry the personal-luxury / coupe-pickup branches.

Marque anchor

Z-code stamped cowl tag · F-body Camaro Z/28

The 1967–1969 Camaro Z/28 and the Z-code cowl tag.

Camaro hub →

The Z-code stamped on the cowl tag (the Z- prefix ordering code authenticating the Z/28 fitment from the assembly plant forward) is the Camaro Z/28 marque-anchor track — the homologation fitment built to race the SCCA Trans-Am series on the GM F-body 108-inch-wheelbase Camaro unibody. The Z/28 runs the DZ-coded 302-cubic-inch small-block V8 (casting 3892657 with K-suffix date-code stamp) drawn from the Chevrolet small-block lineage; the 1967 Z/28 carries the Holley list #4150 carburetor; the 1968 Z/28 carries the same; the 1969 Z/28 carries the Z/28-specific aluminum intake manifold with the same Holley list #4150 carb.

The Z21 white "Z" hockey-stick stripe option code (RPO Z21) is a Z/28- standard fitment — NOT a cosmetology add-on. The 1969-only Hideaway Headlights (RPO D80) option on the Z/28 sits alongside the Z21 stripes on the 1969-only trim callout. Positraction rear (RPO G80) is standard on the Z/28 — a Z/28 with an open rear axle reads as mis-restored at the differential level. The cowl tag Z-code authenticates the engine / option track at the assembly-plant level; the Z21 stripes authenticate the visible Z/28 trim callout; both authenticate against the Z/28 documentation track, not against a base Camaro or an SS 396 chassis with Z21 stripes cosmetically applied.

Reading a base Camaro with Z21 stripes cosmetically painted, or an SS 396 X77-ordered chassis with Z21 stripes, does NOT authenticate a Z/28 — the cowl tag Z-code is the discriminator, not the stripes. The GM F-body Camaro 108-inch-wheelbase unibody is the chassis family; a Z/28 with a Chevy II / Nova 400 cowl tag reads as mis-restored at the body-code level. Reading the F-body Camaro wheelbase against the A-body Chevelle or the X-body Nova crosses the wrong-platform-shells error at the chassis level.

Also on the Chevrolet track

The Corvette lives on its own dedicated hub.

The 1967–1973 Corvette rides the GM Y-body 98-inch-wheelbase fiberglass monocoque — body-number-plate authentication, NOT a Fisher Body cowl tag. The C2 fastback coupe carry-over into the C3 Mako Shark stub-frame launch, the 1967–1969 L88 427 cast-aluminum big-block, the 1963-onward Z06 327, the 1969-only ZL1 single-model-year fitment, the 1970-only LS5 / LS6 454, and the 1971–1973 emissions-era downturn each live on the dedicated hub, with seven per-(model, year) subpages.

Editorial

The Camaro Z/28 is not the SS 396 Camaro with Z21 stripes painted on.

The 1967-onward Camaro Z/28 and the 1967-onward SS 396 Camaro are two distinct fitments of the same F-body chassis — both share the GM F-body 108-inch- wheelbase unibody, both ship from the same Norwood / Van Nuys / Fremont / Los Angeles assembly-plant lines, both ride the same cowl-tag stamped cowl. The Z/28 runs the DZ-coded 302-cubic-inch small-block V8 (casting 3892657 with K-suffix date-code stamp), authenticated by the Z-code ordering prefix on the cowl tag. The SS 396 runs the X77-coded 396-base engine — a 396-cubic-inch big-block V8, the Chevrolet-side big-block, NOT the Z/28 small-block. The X77 prefix is the SS 396 trim / engine combination; the Z- prefix is the Z/28 trim / engine combination. The SS 396 engine family itself is a 1966-onward Chevrolet-side family, originating on the 1966 Chevelle and carried into the 1967-launch Camaro as the F-body SS 396 fitment.

The Z21 stripe option code authenticates the visible Z/28 trim callout, but the cowl tag Z-code authenticates the engine / option track at the assembly-plant level. A 1967-onward SS 396 X77-ordered chassis with Z21 stripes cosmetically painted does NOT authenticate a Z/28 — the cowl tag carries an X77-prefix engine code, not the Z- prefix. The X77 base engine runs the 396 big-block; a 302 small-block swap onto an X77 chassis is mis-restored at the engine level even with the cowl-tag Z-code stamped in — the cowl-tag Z-code authenticates against the block casting, not against a swap.

The 1969-only Hideaway Headlights (RPO D80) option on the Z/28 sits alongside the 1967-onward Z21 stripes on the 1969-only trim callout. Positraction rear (RPO G80) is standard on the Z/28 — a Z/28 with an open rear axle reads as mis-restored at the differential level. The 1967-onward Camaro cowl-tag decoder flow is the Z-code ordering prefix / X77 prefix engineering code / engine-side casting — cross- check the cowl tag against the engine-side casting 3892657 (the 302 small-block) and against the broadcast sheet, not against the marketing brochure.

The 1970 Chevelle SS 454 ran three distinct 454 fitments.

The 1970 Chevelle SS 454 ran THREE distinct 454-cubic-inch fitments: the LS6 454 (450 hp), the LS5 454 (360 hp), and the L34 454 (350 hp). Three distinct 1970-only fitments, three distinct RPO codes, three distinct engine specifications, three distinct hardware stacks. The LS6 RPO code authenticates the highest-output fitment; the LS5 RPO code authenticates the middle-output fitment; the L34 RPO code authenticates the lowest-output fitment. Cross-check the build sheet RPO code against the engine-side castings, not against any single RPO code line alone.

The LS6 454 carries an aluminum Holley 4150 list #4153 780-cfm carburetor (the LS6-only carb with the LS6-only aluminum housing) and the LS6-only cold-air cowl plenum (the air-induction system that sealed against the ZL2 cowl-induction hood hardware via the washer-bottle relocation / vacuum-line routing / sealing-flange pivot hardware). The LS5 ran the LS5-spec cast-iron intake with a Quadrajet 800-cfm; the L34 ran the L34-spec cast-iron intake with a Quadrajet 750-cfm. The LS6-only short-block casting 3999289 authenticates the LS6 at the engine level — the LS6 RPO code on the build sheet AND the casting 3999289 on the short block authenticate the LS6 conjointly, not against any single item alone.

The 1970 Chevelle SS 454 rides the GM A-body 112-inch-wheelbase unibody — shared with the 1970 Pontiac LeMans / GTO, the 1970 Buick Skylark / GS, and the 1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass / 442. The Chevrolet-side cowl tag and the LS6 / LS5 / L34 RPO code authenticate the Chevrolet track; reading a 1970 Pontiac LeMans cowl tag against a 1970 Chevelle SS 454 LS6 chassis reads as mis-restored at the body-code level. The U14 Optiontach hood-mounted tachometer, the AU3 power windows option, and the A01 Soft-Ray glass option are each documented against the build sheet — cross-check the RPO codes for the U14 / AU3 / A01 line items.

Editorial

The 1969 ZL1 is the all-aluminum 427 single-model-year fitment.

The 1969-only Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is a single-model-year 427-cubic-inch fitment on the GM F-body 108-inch-wheelbase Camaro unibody. NOT the 1967-onward Z/28 on the 302 DZ-coded small-block; NOT the 1969 SS 396 X77-prefix 396-base big-block. The ZL1 carries the all-aluminum 427 short block (the cast-aluminum 427 NOT the cast-iron 427 L78 / L89) with a single-model-year COPO 9560 ordering prefix stamping the cowl tag. The aluminum short-block versus cast-iron L78 / L89 is the discriminator at the engine level — the COPO 9560 prefix versus Z- prefix versus X77-prefix is the discriminator at the cowl-tag level.

The 1967-onward L88 on the Corvette C3 stub-frame carries a 427-cubic-inch short block — the 1967–1968 L88 short block is cast aluminum (casting 3959280); the 1969 L88 short block is a different aluminum casting (3969854). Both L88 carry an open-element air-cleaner on a Holley 850 list #4150 carburetor with the L88-only K66 transistorized ignition and J56 / F41 hardware. A 1969 Camaro ZL1 documented as a Corvette L88, or a 1969 Corvette L88 documented as a Camaro ZL1, is the off-by-one-platform error at the chassis level (F-body Camaro unibody vs. C3 Corvette stub-frame).

The 1969 Camaro ZL1 records the same year as the 1969 Chevelle SS 454 (the LS6 454 / LS5 454 / L34 454 fitments on the A-body 112-inch-wheelbase Chevelle unibody) and the 1969-only El Camino SS 454 LS5 (the LS5 360 hp on the personal- luxury / coupe pickup A-body). Cross-platform 1969 Chevrolet: Camaro Z/28 on F- body 108-inch, Camaro SS 396 / ZL1 on F-body 108-inch, Chevelle SS 454 on A-body 112-inch, El Camino SS 454 LS5 on A-body 112-inch coupe pickup, Corvette L88 on C3 Corvette stub-frame. Five 1969 Chevrolet-side fitments, three distinct chassis shells, ONE 427 all-aluminum engine (the ZL1).

Editorial

The 1970 El Camino SS 454 LS5 is NOT the 1970 Chevelle SS 454 LS6.

The 1970 Chevrolet El Camino SS 454 carried the LS5 454 fitment (360 hp on the LS5-spec cast-iron intake with a Quadrajet 800-cfm) — NOT the LS6 454 fitment that the 1970 Chevelle SS 454 carried. The El Camino SS 454 LS5 is the coupe-pickup-track of the A-body 112-inch-wheelbase unibody (shared with the 1970 Chevelle / Pontiac LeMans / Buick Skylark / Oldsmobile Cutlass), while the Chevelle SS 454 LS6 is the personal-luxury coupe-track of the same A-body unibody. Same chassis, same LS5 family, same 454 cubic inches, different LS5 vs LS6 specification, different intake, different carburetor, different ash tray.

The El Camino authentication runs through the body-by-Fisher trim tag (same as the Chevelle SS 454) but carries a body-style code distinct from the Chevelle coupe (the El Camino body-style code carries the pickup-track suffix). The Chevrolet-side cowl tag and the LS5 RPO code authenticate the El Camino SS 454 track, not the Chevelle SS 454 LS6 track. Cross-check the body-by-Fisher tag against the El Camino body-style code AND against the LS5 RPO code, not against either alone.

The 1970 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS 454 (the personal-luxury coupe side of the A-body 112-inch-wheelbase unibody) ALSO carried the LS5 454 fitment — same 360 hp on the LS5-spec cast-iron intake. Three 1970 A-body coupe / pickup / coupe-pickup-track 454 fitments: Chevelle SS 454 LS6 (the high-output 450 hp), El Camino SS 454 LS5 (the coupe pickup 360 hp), Monte Carlo SS 454 LS5 (the personal-luxury 360 hp). Reading a Chevelle SS 454 LS6 against an El Camino SS 454 LS5 is a documented off-by-one-fitment error at the engine level; reading a Chevelle SS 454 LS6 against a Monte Carlo SS 454 LS5 is the same error at the platform branch level.
